Valour is a youth outreach adhoc under NUSMS, dedicated to serving and empowering youths in the community. Our mission is to instil Islamic values related to the self, friendship, and community in their daily lives. This year marked our third collaboration with Pertapis Children’s Home, alongside continued outreach within NUS through our Secondary Committee. We also launched Project Starlight, a new initiative to raise awareness of our cause among the wider public, including NUS students and our Instagram audience.
Our first event had the main objectives of teaching our young participants about the value of hope in a Muslim's life, Islamic morals and how to practise them, and an introduction to career exploration. These aims were fulfilled via:
An Asatizah sharing on “Hope in Islam” for older kids
Morals storytelling for younger kids
Career station games for all kids
This event sought to instill important Islamic values like Rahmah (compassion) and Amanah (trust) into the kids. This was done through a series of fun and engaging activites, such as cookie decorating, clay-crafting, and trust-building games for the kids to bond and work together in a group. There was also a Quranic sharing segment to supplement the kids' experiences with Islamic knowledge.
For this event, we wanted to cultivate a sense of appreciation for the environment in the kids, so that it would help them to develop unity in the community, thereby inspiring them to carry out acts of kindness. This was executed in the form of a sports carnival, where the kids and participants played games together, promoting teamwork and community. Additionally, there was a group nature painting activity which had the kids and their assigned student partners create an artwork with materials from the environment. To end the day off, there was a wishlist gifting from Valour to the kids.
We planned an Iftar session with the Pertapis Children's Home in the month of Ramadan as our farewell to the organisation for the year. This was followed by Maghrib, Isya', and Terawih prayers in Jemaah, and a short farewell video and gifting session.
Valour provides an opportunity for individuals who are interested in reaching out to youths in our community to nurture their resilience, confidence and to instil the spirit of giving back to our society.
Through Valour, one would experience meaningful collaborative work within the committee and with the youths. The activities will not only be fun and foster meaningful bonds with youths, it will also be educational and enriched with valuable lessons.
