Overseas Community Involvement Project (OCIP)

Project ASA is an overseas community involvement programme (OCIP) under NUSMS formed with the primary goal to raise awareness of overseas communities that face social, economic and environmental challenges to their livelihoods.
Mission: A.S.A – Alleviating Hardship, Sustaining Biodiversity and Appreciating Humanity
The AY24/25 iteration of OCIP is known as Project ASA Salam, in short, Project ASAS. This is derived from the Arabic terms asas and salam, linguistically referring to foundation and peace. By emulating the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w., we strive to build a strong foundation (asas) for personal and collective growth. With akhirah (hereafter) as our end goal, we aspire to strive for salam, beginning with Ikhlas (sincerity) through all our efforts.
Fundraiser
The first step to embarking on Project ASA Salam was a 3-part fundraiser, consisting of a Baked Goods Sale, an Arts & Craft Segment and a Study & Care Pack Sponsorship initiative. Besides solely raising funds, this Fundraiser allowed for donors to contribute more directly by designing pencil cases and bracelets, which were gifted to our Cambodian Beneficiaries, together with the sponsored Study & Care Packs. Such a creative approach to fundraising ensured that the community not only gave but learned, amplifying the awareness of the beneficiary and inspiring future action for the cause.
Local Community Involvement Programme
Prior to embarking on the main trip to Cambodia, we facilitated arts and visual arts lessons for students of special abilities at AWWA. Besides extending the benefit of Project ASA Salam to the local community, this opportunity provided us exposure to teaching and guiding young students, in preparation for the main trip. Ultimately, the experience taught us the importance of adaptability, a valuable lesson we carried with us during the main trip.
Mission Trip to Cambodia
In commemoration of Eid Al-Adha, we had the opportunity to experience Qurban in Cambodia in collaboration with our partner, Emaan Catalyst Community. The team had participated in the herding, slaughtering, cleaning and distribution of Qurban Meat to the local community. It was a meaningful experience which reminded us of humility, obedience and charity – values which we strive to carry in our daily lives.
Mission Trip to Cambodia
We had the opportunity to share with students about Financial Literacy, Arts & Craft, Healthy Living, Careers and Emergency Situations. Just as we hope to inspire the students with such topics, we were in turn inspired by their gratitude, resilience and the joy they showed while learning. We were honoured to leave a Mural Design, hoping to inspire students by enhancing their learning environment.
Mission Trip to Cambodia
The experience at Batom Sakor was a heartwarming one, where we had donated clothes and taught the local children the basics of Wudhu’ (Ablution) and Prayer. For the villagers, we had distributed Care Packs, consisting of Food Necessities and Clothes. Finally, we had repainted the classroom at the mosque, in hopes to enhance their learning space.
Mission Trip to Cambodia
We engaged with the students, sharing about Arts & Craft, Healthy Living, Careers and Emergency Situations. The energy and curiosity of the students had reminded us of our purpose – not just to teach, but to plant seeds of hope and possibilities. We were honoured to leave Painted Hopscotch Corners around the school, hoping to embrace the energy and excitement of the students.
