ISLAM AWARENESS SERIES
Islam Awareness Series (IAS) aims to share knowledge and insights about Islam among NUS students and provide a platform for discourse about Islam for Muslims and Non-Muslims. This is done through engagement with both Muslim and non-Muslim audiences through talks and dialogues.
The theme for IAS 1444H is Lea, which refers to an open grassy land. Lea represents the open space for individuals to explore themselves without fearing being judged. IAS intends to help both Muslims and Non-Muslims engage in acts of introspection and reflection for them to be able to learn more about themselves and forge a personal identity that they are comfortable with. IAS also aims to foster an environment where everyone's differences are accepted by creating a safe space for the sharing of ideas and perceptions.
Mission: To serve as a safe and judgement-free space for Muslims to share and gain Islamic knowledge, regardless of their religious background, as well as understand different perspectives.
Vision: To foster a culture of inclusivity within the Muslim community in NUS.
AN ENQUIRY INTO ISLAM
The aim of this event was to allow participants to reflect on why exactly they follow a
particular faith (or don't for that matter) through a series of questions asked during the event, in the
hopes of leaving participants with more questions to research on, in order to navigate through their
religious identity ultimately. It will also raise awareness about the nature of the Islamic faith, Iman.
THE POINT OF SUFFERING
This event intends to leave its participants with an understanding of how a Muslim can adapt
and overcome. Ultimately, how to be on the path of Ihsan.
This event aims to ask the following questions: (i) Why were pain and suffering created? (ii) How do they shape us? (iii) How have figures in Islam, old and new, faced their struggles? and (iv) How can we assist those close to us who are suffering/ going through hardships?
UNDERSTANDING ONE'S DESIRES: TEMPTATIONS AND RESTRICTIONS
This event intends for participants to be enlightened on Tasawwuf through a two-part sharing. This would in turn aid them in achieving Tawheed, Taqwa and the complete love of God which are the main three elements of Tasawwuf. Through this, participants could also attain Ihsan based on the knowledge gained on how to cure diseases of the heart.
IMPROVING ONE'S SELF: JIHAD, THE BATTLE FROM WITHIN
This event, which was held at Masjid Kassim, aims to break the misconception of Jihad that is portrayed by the media by clarifying the different definitions of Jihad (internally, externally) before focusing on internal Jihad. This is to motivate participants to set the right intentions as they start to improve one’s Self (Ihsan).
WHY JOIN?
IAS provides opportunities to create a safe and inclusive space for seekers who wish to learn about Islam, regardless of their religion and background. IAS aims to bring about harmony and understanding amongst people of different beliefs by serving as a platform for discourse and interaction.
By becoming part of the IAS committee, one will experience self-growth with a diverse team and expand their knowledge base through events curated, organized, and managed by you and your team. Whether you are looking to gain experience and knowledge or simply be involved in your community, IAS allows you to tap into your creativity while strengthening your faith and building confidence.
Each year, the IAS committee plans for a series of events that can range from talks by renowned speakers to workshops and carnivals targeted towards audiences seeking knowledge about Islam. In previous years, IAS has organized sharing sessions by reverts, interfaith discussions, forums, and even an IAS Carnival where booths were set up to share about Islamic practices, art, food, and history. This flexibility and freedom in organizing events will allow one to flex their creative muscles and pioneer new ways to reach out to a wider community through Islam.
