JUNE

19th - 21st June 2008 - APEX Camp for Pri6 kids!

APEX (Ace Psle EXams) Coordinating Committee is a group of aspiring individuals who are inspired to help madrasah students in their academic subjects. As we all know, madrasahs are important institutions in producing asatizahs who are educators of the Islamic community.

Under the Compulsory Education Act, designated schools, such as the madrasahs, have to meet a certain PSLE benchmark for the "designated school" status, which allows them to continue admitting children exempted from CE at Primary 1 from 2008 onwards.

As such we are motivated to assist Madrasah Irsyad focusing on their Primary 6 students at this current point of time to excel and meet the bench-mark for 2008 PSLE for Madrasah Irsyad. In search of mentors to reinforce concepts being taught in class and be an inspiration for these Pri 6 students to excel in their studies.

As part of the movement, we would be holding an intensive study camp to supplement the ongoing weekly Satuday mentoring.

28th June 2008 - Muslim Youth Intelligentsia Series - The Quest for Jerusalem: A Religious Perspective

Time: 3.30 pm to 6.00 pm
Venue:
AMP Auditorium, Association of Muslim Professionals, 1 Pasir Ris Drive 4, Level 4 (Singapore 519457)

Speaker: Assoc. Prof. Kamar Oniah Kamazruzaman (International Islamic University of Malaysia)

Professor Kamar Oniah Kamaruzaman, is currently an Associate Professor at the International Islamic University of Malaysia. She specialises in Comparative Religion. She obtained her first degree, in English Studies, from the University of Malaya, her MA in Comparative Religion from Temple University, Philadelphia, USA, and her Ph.D. in Islamic Thought and Civilization from ISTAC, of the International Islamic University Malaysia.

She is a founding member and Regional Representative for Australasia of The World Council of Muslims on Interfaith Relation (WCMIR) as well as a founding member of the World Council of Spiritual and Religious Leaders. She also participates in the Parliament of World Religion. Locally, among others, she is a Co-Director of the Malaysian Interfaith Network (MIN) and is especially involved with Muslim Youth Outreach programs.

She has published a number of works pertaining to Muslim scholarship in comparative religion and on interfaith dialogues and engagements. She has given numerous lectures on Islam as well as other religions, home and abroad, to Muslims and non-Muslim audiences. She believes that education should move from producing 'hollow beings' to producing 'fulfilled beings' - for to be objective and scientific, she feels, surely does not entail one having to be hollow and spiritually vacant.

Professor Kamar Oniah Kamaruzaman is a Malaysian Muslim actively involved in interfaith dialogues and works, at home and abroad. She is deeply disturbed by the sporadic violence and atmosphere of restlessness across the world. She visualizes a world at peace with itself and human beings living together in the spirit of human family-hood.

Abstract: The topic delves into the historical aspect of Jews and Muslim based on the revealed scriptures. As a qualified Islamic scholar and having attended several comparative religion and interfaith dialogues and engagements, the speaker will discuss the monotheistic understanding of Islam and Judaism. She will shed some understanding on how Muslims and Jews have been living together in the past civilization in peace and harmony.

Applying a contemporary unique approach, she will explain the wisdom behind the different terms that the Holy Quran uses in addressing the Jews and be able to differentiate between religious and political agendas.

Miscellaneous: We appreciate if you could confirm your attendance by completing and returning the reply slip by fax to 6583 8028 or by email to Ms Shereen Mohd of AMP by Wednesday 25 June 2008.

For further queries, you may contact Ms Shereen Mohd at 6517 4970.
